Hackensack UMC recognized for treatment of Parkinson’s disease
For people with Parkinson’s disease, a stay in the hospital can be hazardous.
Hospital staff who are unfamiliar with needs of patients with the disorder may inadvertently take actions that worsen its symptoms like delaying medication or prescribing drugs that are not recommended.
Hackensack University Medical Center has become the first hospital in the country to receive certification for its management of Parkinson’s disease from the Joint Commission, a nonprofit organization that sets standards and certifies health-care programs, the hospital announced recently.
Dr. Hooman Azmi, a Bergen County neurosurgeon specializing in surgical treatments for Parkinson’s, led a team at the hospital that included physicians, nurses, pharmacists and information-technology specialists.
