Patty Petrula’s Story

Strokes, brain aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are often life-threatening conditions that require urgent, subspecialized care. Fortunately, as one of the highest-volume, most sophisticated neurovascular centers in the mid-Atlantic, New Jersey Brain and Spine provides 24/7 evaluation and treatment of well over 700 patients with these conditions each year.
When we do determine our patients need to undergo a procedure, over 90% of the time we are able to treat them using minimally invasive techniques, allowing them to have a shorter hospital stay and a faster return to work and their normal way of life.
We perform approximately 250 major surgical or endovascular procedures each year for strokes, aneurysms, AVMs and vascular tumors. Studies show that high volumes of procedures are linked to better outcomes, and our patient results are consistent with those findings. For example, 88% of the patients we treat for ruptured brain aneurysms completely recover without disability, compared to only 62% of patients reported nationally.
We bring together the best medical minds to care for you
We work closely with other top specialists to ensure you receive consistently superb, coordinated care. Our multi-disciplinary neurovascular team includes vascular and endovascular neurosurgeons, vascular neurologists, neuro critical care specialists, neuroradiologists, pediatric neurosurgeons and radiation oncologists.
Having a physician who is an expert in all three neurovascular modalities—surgery, embolization and radiosurgery—provides more tailored therapies and improves care quality.
Common Conditions
Our neurovascular experts treat a full range of conditions affecting the arteries and veins of the nervous system.
Common Treatments
We offer a full range of state-of-the-art surgical and endovascular (minimally invasive) treatments. Fellowship-trained in both vascular neurosurgery and endovascular neurosurgery, our board-certified neurovascular surgeons ensure you receive the optimal treatment for your condition—whether that involves surgery, embolization and/or radiosurgery.
Clinical Trials
We have participated in over a dozen neurovascular clinical trials and humanitarian device exemption registries, enabling us to offer the most advanced treatments available to our patients. As a high volume tertiary neurovascular referral center, we perform more of these procedures than any center in the region. If any of these more advanced treatment options are optimal for your condition, we will thoroughly discuss it with you so you can make the best decision.
