Patient Story: Ashley’s Recovery After Cervical Disc Herniation

New Jersey Brain and Spine | Patient Story: Ashley’s Recovery After Cervical Disc Herniation

A stroke at birth left Ashley with cerebral palsy and limited mobility on her right side. So when she woke up at 1 a.m. one morning with her left arm completely paralyzed, the magnitude of the implications—almost complete immobility—was powerful. She had no idea why her paralysis was so sudden. Ashley rushed to the emergency room, fast.

Initial imaging showed two cervical disc herniations, for which Ashley underwent a C4–5 anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF). For a few weeks, her left arm paralysis improved. Then, everything changed.

A Sharp Decline

A month after surgery, Ashley’s symptoms returned, and worsened. Ashley collapsed; she was no longer able to walk easily, if at all. Frightened, she needed answers.

But answers were in short supply when Ashley went for a second opinion after her initial hospital visit … and then a third opinion… and then, several others. No doctor she consulted took her case seriously enough. Fearing total loss of mobility, she again went to the hospital. This time, updated scans revealed seven more disc herniations than originally identified.

Five weeks in, and symptoms worsening, Ashley was losing mobility, along with her hope.

A Chance Encounter Shifts Everything

One afternoon, Ashley went for a much-needed break and treated herself to an ice cream. But a chance encounter with another dessert lover who was wearing a cervical collar led to something much better: new hope. The new friend shared that she had struggled with many of the same medical issues as Ashley,  and that Dr. Ira Goldstein at New Jersey Brain & Spine changed her life.

Ashley filled out the consultation form right away. A few hours later, her phone rang, the NJBS team was able to schedule her quickly

Finally, a Surgeon Who Listens

When she met Dr. Goldstein, she instantly understood why patients recommended him.

Dr. Goldstein sat with her for 45 minutes. He explained everything calmly, without rushing into and out of the exam room. He explained everything clearly, and formed a plan they were both onboard with.

They decided to move forward with a C5–6 ACDF and exploration of her prior fusion.

The Turning Point

When she woke up in recovery, the nurses helped her stand. Before surgery, she could barely walk. Almost immediately after surgery, she walked normally, including several celebratory laps around the nurses’ station. The pain was gone, and her stability was back. Her confidence returned.

Friends, family, and staff couldn’t believe it.

“I thought I was going to have to learn an entirely different lifestyle.

Before surgery, I could barely walk. After surgery, I can walk normally. Dr. Goldstein gave me my life back.”

Living Strong Again

Ashley had been preparing for a life of limitations. Instead, she walked out of the hospital stronger, stable, and pain free.

Her experience is a reminder that when it comes to spine surgery, skill and compassion matter. Listening matters. Time matters. And choosing the right surgeon changes everything.

Ashley didn’t just recover, she reclaimed her life, with help from New Jersey Brain & Spine.
