What is kneecap pain or patella pain?

Knee pain is frequently related to problems with the kneecap or patella.  The condition is known as patellofemoral syndrome.

What causes kneecap pain?

Causes include soft tissue inflammation such as patella bursitis, misalignment of the patella as it moves up and down the knee, or arthritis or wear-and-tear of the cartilage behind the patella.  History, physical examination, and at times imaging can help us determine the exact cause and conservative course of treatment.
